Popular Mechanics just published a piece on the INFINITI variable compression engine and what it means for your vehicle. You’ll find it in the 2019 QX50, which is well worth a look regardless, but the VC feature really puts the crossover on another level.
The scientific publication explains the technology well, saying that it is capable of changing its compression ratio from 8:1 to as much as 14:1. The higher the proportion, the more tightly you’re squeezing the air-fuel mixture in the engine. This means more power and gas efficiency.
Wouldn’t a high ratio be better all the time, then, you might wonder? Actually, no, because forced-induction engines (like anything that’s turbocharged) collect air and put it into the engine for better performance. Tight compacting can then cause unpredictable behavior or knocking.
The INFINITI variable compression turbo engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four, and it can operate at a very high ratio without knocking. This is just one of the many amazing aspects of the 2019 QX50! You’ll also appreciate occupant-sensing airbags, heated seats with memory, and a universal transceiver.
The next time you’re in the greater Seattle, Washington, area, stop by INFINITI of Tacoma. We can’t wait to schedule your test drive!
