Unveiled last month at the 2018 Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Nissan Smokinâ€™ Titan was officially fired up this week for a four-city tour. Dubbed The Great Titan Meat Up, Nissanâ€™s ultimate tailgating and barbecuing pickup brought truck and grill enthusiasts together to share their appreciation for brawny performance and delicious eats.

The Smokin' Titan kicked off its tour in Idaho City before making stops at Roaming Buffalo BBQ in Denver, Q39 BBQ in Kansas City, Salt + Smoke BBQ in St. Louis, and Central BBQ in Memphis. But, that was all just a pre-game event for this Saturday when the heat will be turned up at the Great Titan Meat Up in Pigeon Forge.Â

With celebrity chefs Cory Bahr and David Rose serving as judges, teams will be challenged to out-cook a Nissan executive team led by Billy Hayes, Division VP, Nissan Regional Operations, who is not only an outdoor cooking enthusiast,Â but one of the masterminds behind the Smokinâ€™ Titan. Hayes will be joined by three other Nissan executives and will compete against five media organizations, as well as a team from Nissan Canton Assembly, where the Smokin' Titan was assembled.Â

The Nissan Titan Brings Improved Safety Ratings to Seattle, Washington

Thereâ€™s great news coming out of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The automotive safety agency recently reported that the Nissan Titan Crew Cab pickup has improved its rating in the driver-side small overlap front test, lifting its score from Marginal to Good. The new rating applies to models built after August 2017 when Nissan modified the front-end structure to improve occupant protection.

The IIHSâ€™s small overlap test, which was introduced in 2012, reproduces front left corner contact at 40 mph with an object like a tree or pole. For evaluation purposes, the object is a 5-foot-tall rigid barrier.Â

Watch how the 2017 Nissan Titan Crew Cab (built after August 2017) performed in the driver-side small overlap IIHS crash test:

As you can see, the driver space of the modified Titan held up well in the crash test with maximum intrusion on the lower interior of 17 cm at the lower hinge pillar. Upper interior intrusion measured 7 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel.Â

When the older 2017 Titan was tested, the driver space was not maintained well, with a lower interior intrusion measuring as much as 27 cm at the lower hinge pillar and 21 cm at the parking brake pedal. Upper interior intrusion measured 16-19 cm at the instrument panel and hinge pillar, and the steering column was also pushed back 9 cm towards the dummy.

And aside from its top score in the driver-side small overlap IIHS crash test, the re-worked 2017 and 2018 Titans also boasted â€œGoodâ€ scores in other categories as well, including the moderate overlap front, side, and roof strength tests, and head restraints and seats, proving that this pickup performer is a solid bet when searching for a truck offering impeccable safety.
