Based on their findings, the 2018 Leaf was best suited for two boosters in the back row. Nissan is known across the globe as a preeminent innovator and engineer of cutting-edge automotive technologies â€“ and now, they are leading the world in a project thatÂ re-uses electric vehicle batteries. Dubbed "The Light Reborn," this initiative is utilizing old Nissan Leaf batteries in a new way by powering LED streetlights with no external electrical connections.

Nissan, along with their affiliate 4R Energy Corporation, is currently testing the technology in Namie, Japan, which is a city that was abandoned after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. Once this pilot project gets underway, there are plans to do a full-scale installation in the town later this year.

According to an Engadget article, Nissan also has a strategy to convert batteries from old and destroyed EVs in residential homes and buildings that use solar or wind power. The batteries will be used to store energy during the day for use in the evening or during a failure. Another project is to use the recycled batteries in "smart booths" to power cellphones and other devices. Quite revolutionary!
