DODGE BLOWS BEYOND COMPETITION IN J.D. POWER STUDIES
Dodge has done it again. The domestic dynamo has blown past competitors to achieve pole position among key categories in J.D. Power’s 2020 Initial Quality and Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) studies. The manufacturer did so with a focus on excellence—and that same excellence is now available on our lot here in St. Paul.
This year’s awards haul by Dodge is highlighted by three noteworthy achievements. Dodge is the only domestic brand to have ended the year atop J.D. Power’s U.S. Initial Quality Study; the only brand to hold the #1 place in the U.S. Driver APEAL awards; and the only domestic brand to earn special recognition in the Midsize Sports Cars category thanks to the first-place finish of its 2020 Challenger. The competition just couldn’t measure up with Dodge in 2020.
TOPS IN INITIAL QUALITY
Let’s toss it back to 1986 for a moment. Back then—amid big hair, bigger boom boxes, and unapologetically neon-colored clothes—J.D. Power launched the Initial Quality Study on behalf of consumers. It stood as a full examination of all major automotive brands, checking on their failures and showcasing their achievements as measured over the first 90 days of consumer use. The goal of the study became to highlight which brands and manufacturers looked out for the consumer—and which didn’t.
Dodge has long ranked well for consumers ever since 1986, and continues that proud tradition in 2020. This year, the automaker stands as the only domestic brand to gain first place in the Initial Quality Study in the US. Dodge’s lineup is anchored by a fleet of cars (including the Challenger, Grand Caravan, Charger, and Durango) that overdelivered, resulting in an enviable manufacturer score of 136 PP100.
So, how does Dodge’s score stack up to the competition? Hint: Less is more. As a result, Ford (at 174 PP100), Honda (at 177 PP100), and Mazda (184 PP100), all fell short of even making the Top 10, proving that having a “big name” simply isn’t any guarantee as to quality and customer satisfaction.
MASS-MARKET 'APEAL' IN ST. PAUL
J.D. Power began the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL) in 1995. The index was predicated upon key metrics, including but not limited to sales reports, consumer advocacy, and brand loyalty. In sum, it gauged public sentiment about brands and would go on to be used as a consumer shopping guide.
Now, in 2020, Dodge has secured its place as the highest-ranked mass-market brand in the US. Its 872 score places it easily above both domestic and foreign competition, such as GMC (857), Ford (853), and BMW (869).
Dodge is now the first U.S. brand to land atop both the ‘Initial Quality’ and ‘APEAL’ studies.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: DODGE'S CHALLENGER EARNS TOP SPOT
2020 marks a two-peat: Dodge’s Challenger now holds the #1 spot in the Midsize Sports Car category for the second year in a row, according to J.D. Power.
Now available in nine trims—GT, R/T, SXT, Scat Pack 392, Scat Pack 392 Widebody, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, Hellcat Redeye, and Hellcat Redeye Widebody—Dodge’s 2020 Challenger delights with a 6.2L HEMI V8 engine that produces a whopping 797 HP and 707 lb.-ft. of torque. Enhanced responses are provided via the active transfer case with front-axle disconnect, and precision is assured as a product of the segment-exclusive AWD function. Additionally, drivers have their choice of either a six-speed manual or a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.
