What Canadian shoppers ask

The questions MX-5 shoppers bring to the showroom.

Drawn from 1,724 MX-5 comments posted since 2023 on the MotorMouth YouTube channel. Question themes sit apart from verified vehicle facts and help prepare a more useful test drive.

01

Soft top or RF?

Styling comes up in 260 comments, more than any other MX-5 theme. The soft top starts with the GS at $35,700, and the RF with its retractable hardtop starts with the GS-P at $42,700, $3,000 more than the GS-P soft top. The RF GT Grand Sport Package adds a gloss black top and Sports Tan Nappa leather. A fourth-time owner wrote: "The MX-5 is that rare timeless car that's for anyone who's young at heart."

02

What does it cost?

Price and value come up in 120 comments. Mazda Canada lists the 2026 MX-5 soft top at $35,700 for the GS, $39,700 for the GS-P, $44,100 for the GS-P Sport Package and $42,800 for the GT. The RF runs from $42,700 for the GS-P to $49,400 for the GT Grand Sport Package. Freight and PDE add $2,095.

Take this to your test drive

Ask for the all-in price with freight and fees, and decide early whether you want a package, since they are manual only.

03

Manual or automatic?

The transmission comes up in 36 comments. A six-speed manual is standard on every MX-5, and the GS-P and GT offer a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The GS soft top, the Sport Package and the Grand Sport Package are manual only, and the GS-P manual adds a DSC-Track mode. One owner wrote: "Bought a ND2 soft top 6 speed as a second car 7 months ago after refusing to consider one for years. What was I thinking? I can't stay out of it now."

Take this to your test drive

Drive the manual and the automatic back to back if you are unsure, and try the paddle shifters on a quiet road.

04

Is the engine enough?

Engine and power come up in 89 comments. The 2.0-litre four makes 181 hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm and revs to 7,500 rpm.

Take it up through the gears on an on-ramp and a winding road, where the high-revving engine shows its character.

05

Which trim should I choose?

The GS-P adds sport-tuned Bilstein shocks, an asymmetric limited-slip differential, heated seats and nine-speaker Bose audio. The GS-P Sport Package adds Brembo front brakes, 17-inch BBS forged wheels, heated Recaro seats and Alcantara dash trim, and the GT adds black leather, automatic climate control and Mazda Online Navigation.

Sit in the standard seats and the Recaro seats, and decide whether you want the GT comfort features or the Sport Package hardware.

06

What tech comes with it?

Interior and tech come up in 158 comments. Every MX-5 has an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wired on the GS and wireless on the GS-P and GT for 2026. The GT adds Mazda Online Navigation, SiriusXM with a three-month trial and hands-free Alexa, and Mazda Connected Vehicle Services come with a one-year trial.

07

Can I drive it in winter?

Winter driving comes up in 67 comments. The GS-P and GT add heated seats and heated mirrors, and the GT adds automatic climate control. An owner in Sweden wrote: "Putting on snow wheels and drive all winter, been to ski trips."

Take this to your test drive

Budget for a set of winter tires on their own wheels, and ask the dealer about storage if you plan to park it for the season.

08

How much fuel does it use?

Fuel economy comes up in 20 comments. Natural Resources Canada rates the manual at 8.1 L/100 km (29 mpg US) combined and the automatic at 8.0 L/100 km (29 mpg US) combined, on premium fuel. One viewer wrote: "Not only is an MX5 a blast to drive, it's also one of the most reliable and economical vehicles one can buy. Plus, it looks great too. Perfect."

Take this to your test drive

Ask the dealer which fuel grade Mazda recommends for the MX-5, and factor it into your running costs.
