The 2026 Outback is the seventh generation of Subaru's rugged wagon, marking the model's 30th year. It keeps similar proportions but is about 51 mm (2 in) taller and boxier, with more room for passengers and cargo, a redesigned interior and physical climate controls. Every Canadian Outback has Symmetrical Full-Time all-wheel drive and a CVT. The Touring uses a 180 hp 2.5-litre engine; the Limited XT, Wilderness and Premier XT use a 260 hp 2.4-litre turbo. Canadian pricing runs from $40,895 to $51,195 MSRP. Prices and equipment come from Subaru Canada; fuel ratings from Natural Resources Canada; space figures from Zack and Andrea Spencer's MotorMouth review notes, converted to metric.

What Canadian shoppers ask

The questions Outback shoppers bring to the showroom.

Drawn from 2,380 comments on MotorMouth's Outback videos, including the Trailseeker review posted since 2023 on the MotorMouth YouTube channel. Question themes sit apart from verified vehicle facts and help prepare a more useful test drive.

01

What do you think of the new look?

Styling is by far the biggest theme, raised in 799 comments. The new Outback has vertical headlamps, a textured lower front fascia for scratch resistance, wider roof pillars, new rear lights and SUBARU spelled out across the back. It is about 51 mm (2 in) taller and boxier than before, which Zack and Andrea note adds interior and cargo room while keeping the Outback's practicality. A viewer who saw it after the review wrote: "Zack was right. The looks of the new Outback have grown on me."

See it in person and in daylight, and compare the Wilderness cladding with the Touring and Premier XT.

02

How does it drive?

Engine and power come up in 320 comments. Subaru improved ride quality and quietness, mounted new low-fatigue seats directly to the chassis, and gave the Outback a version of the WRX steering rack for a more direct feel. The Touring's 2.5-litre makes 180 hp; the turbo 2.4-litre on every other trim makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. A current Outback owner who test drove the new one wrote: "WOW. I was surprised how much quieter it was compared to mine. The second biggest improvement was the handling."

Take this to your test drive

Drive the Touring and a turbo trim back to back on a highway on-ramp, and listen for road noise on rough pavement.

03

Is there a hybrid or electric Outback?

Hybrid and electric power come up in 387 comments. The 2026 Outback is offered in Canada with gas engines only. For shoppers who want an electric Subaru wagon-style SUV, Zack and Andrea called the all-electric Trailseeker the closest EV to an Outback; Subaru Canada prices the 2027 Trailseeker from $49,995 MSRP.

Take this to your test drive

If you are weighing gas against electric, test drive both and compare running costs on your own daily distance.

04

What does it cost?

Price and value come up in 335 comments. Subaru Canada prices the 2026 Outback at $40,895 for the Touring, $48,195 for the Limited XT, $49,195 for the Wilderness and $51,195 for the Premier XT. The lineup was streamlined for 2026, with the Touring now the entry trim.

Take this to your test drive

Ask for the all-in price with freight and fees, and decide early whether you want the turbo, since it comes on every trim above the Touring.

05

What tech comes with it?

Interior and tech come up in 357 comments. Every 2026 Outback has a 12.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with a new calm mode, a wireless charger and a hands-free power liftgate. Climate controls are back on dedicated buttons and knobs, and the door pockets hold 32-ounce bottles. One viewer liked the new screen position: "The new Outback looks so much better in person than on video. I was surprised with how much I liked its look as I walked around it and sat in it. Also, the infotainment screen is more eye-level, which makes it safer to follow Waze, etc."

Take this to your test drive

Pair your phone, try the climate knobs and the calm mode on the driver display, and ask the dealer to walk you through EyeSight.

06

How does it handle winter and rough roads?

All-wheel drive and winter driving come up in 129 comments. Every Outback has Symmetrical Full-Time AWD and X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, and ground clearance is 220 mm (8.7 in). The Wilderness rises to 241 mm (9.5 in) with improved approach and departure angles, adaptive dampers, an aluminum skid plate and all-terrain tires.

Take this to your test drive

Budget for winter tires, and if you go off pavement, ask the dealer to show you X-MODE and Hill Descent Control.

07

Is it big enough for my family?

Space, cargo and rear seats come up in 100 comments. MotorMouth's notes list 1,092 mm (43 in) of front legroom and 1,003 mm (39.5 in) in the rear. Cargo space is 980 L (34.6 cu ft) behind the rear seat and 2,280 L (80.5 cu ft) overall, both larger than the outgoing model. A protective cargo tray and tonneau cover are standard.

Take this to your test drive

Bring your usual cargo, car seats or sports gear, and fold the rear seat to check the load floor.

08

Can it tow, and how much fuel does it use?

Fuel economy comes up in 100 comments and towing in 60. The Touring can tow 2,700 lb (1,225 kg) and the turbo trims 3,500 lb (1,588 kg). The roof can hold an 800 lb (363 kg) static load and 220 lb (100 kg) while driving. Natural Resources Canada rates the 2.5-litre at 8.5 L/100 km (28 mpg US) combined and the 2.4-litre turbo at 9.7 L/100 km (24 mpg US) combined, or 10.2 L/100 km (23 mpg US) for the Wilderness.
