What Canadian shoppers ask

The questions Prius shoppers bring to the showroom.

Drawn from 2,002 Prius comments posted since 2023 on the MotorMouth YouTube channel. Question themes sit apart from verified vehicle facts and help prepare a more useful test drive.

01

Hybrid or plug-in hybrid?

The hybrid and plug-in choice is the biggest theme, raised in 630 Prius comments. The Prius hybrid makes 196 hp with all-wheel drive; the Prius Plug-in Hybrid makes 220 hp and can drive up to 72 km (45 mi) on electricity, according to Toyota Canada. One plug-in owner described daily use: "I drive my 26 Prius PHEV on EV mode everyday."

Take this to your test drive

Map your daily round trip. If it fits inside the plug-in's electric range and you can charge at home, price both versions.

02

What does it cost?

Price and value come up in 494 comments. Toyota Canada lists the 2027 Prius from $39,000 for the XLE AWD to $44,700 for the Limited AWD, and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid from $41,080 for the SE to $49,160 for the XSE Premium.

Take this to your test drive

Ask for the all-in price with freight and fees, and confirm which plug-in hybrid incentives apply in your province.

03

How far will it go on electricity?

Toyota Canada estimates up to 72 km (45 mi) of electric range for the Plug-in SE on 17-inch wheels and 64 km (40 mi) for the XSE on 19-inch wheels. Every Prius Plug-in Hybrid comes with a dual-voltage charger and Level 1 and Level 2 charging cables. An early plug-in owner wrote: "First tank of gas lasted me over 1300km. Kept charging it."

Take this to your test drive

Ask how long a full charge takes on a Level 2 outlet, and price a home installation.

04

Is it good in winter?

Winter driving and all-wheel drive come up in 142 comments. Both Prius hybrid trims come with electronic on-demand all-wheel drive in Canada, according to Toyota Canada. The Limited adds heated rear seats and a heated and ventilated front row. One buyer chose the AWD hybrid: "I ordered a 2023 Prius XLE AWD mainly because of the new design and features."

Take this to your test drive

If you are choosing the plug-in, ask the dealer to confirm its drive layout, and budget for a good set of winter tires either way.

05

Does the design stand out?

Styling is discussed in 430 Prius comments, more than in most models, and many viewers are fans of the current shape. One wrote: "Love what Toyota has done to this latest Prius. Looks are fantastic, more power and more EV range."

See it in daylight in the colour you want, and compare the 17-inch and 19-inch wheels in person.

06

Prius or Corolla Hybrid?

Zack and Andrea compared the two directly, and the comparison runs through the comments. The Prius hybrid makes 196 hp with standard all-wheel drive in Canada and is rated at 4.8 L/100 km (49 mpg US) combined, according to Toyota Canada. A viewer who has owned both wrote: "Having owned both at one time I would however pick the new Prius. The design inside and out, plus the new horsepower and excellent fuel economy give the edge for me, even if the price is higher."

Take this to your test drive

Drive both on the same day and compare rear-seat room and the hatch opening.

07

Is there enough room?

Space and cargo come up in 102 comments. Toyota Canada says the Prius seats up to five adults and the rear seats fold 60/40, and the Limited and XSE Premium add a power back door. One long-time Prius owner wrote: "As a current Prius owner, a new Gen Prius is the winner. More versatility with the hatch."

Take this to your test drive

Bring your usual cargo and check the rear-seat headroom with your tallest passenger.

08

How does it drive?

Engine and power come up in 168 comments. The current Prius makes 196 hp as a hybrid and 220 hp as a plug-in, according to Toyota Canada. One viewer wrote: "Toyota has finally got the Prius down. What a great package."

Take this to your test drive

Try a highway merge in both versions, and in the plug-in compare driving in EV mode and hybrid mode.
