As a full-size, heavy-duty pickup, the 2021 Ram 3500 Big Horn is the first model in the trim line-up that is equipped with the Electronic Trailer Brake Controller. This safety element comes in handy when you need to haul an attachment of any kind, ensuring seamless hitch responses in BC.
Â
Its main function is to communicate to the trailer’s brakes which action to take based on the input from the driver. To use this feature, you first need to set the gain. If it is too high, the brakes will be overworked and may even lock up. If it is too low, it will not provide enough stopping force to bring the truck and attachment to a halt.
Â
You can control this mechanism by selecting the corresponding button located on the central console. Hit the plus or minus buttons to adjust the gain setting accordingly. If you need to engage the brakes manually, you may do so by squeezing the paddles (found in the same area) together.
Â
So how much gain do you need? That all depends on what you are hauling. The number you settle for will be based on the weight. You may have to try a few different settings out before you find the perfect one, but this feature will ensure that you achieve precise control.
