yellowfin tuna fishing los suenos costa ricaFew fish are as aptly named as the Yellowfin. This breed hulks along the warm waters of Los Suenos, with golden stripes running down its scales and catching the light. It’s one of the most distinctive offshore predators, and anglers often try to pull it onboard.

Having the right bait, therefore, proves crucial.

Live Bait

The Yellowfin has few dietary preferences, often eating whatever it can find. Anglers usually achieve the most success, however, with Sardines, Skipjacks and Pacific Mackerels. These fish have bolder smells and blood trails, making them more appealing.

Artificial Bait

The Yellowfin’s eyesight is exceptional. Most artificial bait, therefore, will be too easy for it to spot. Choose fluorocarbon leaders and cedar plugs to reduce line visibility and hide hooks.

Location

Visit the Los Suenos Marina to find all Yellowfin baiting options.

jack crevalle fishing los suenos costa ricaThere is a scavenger in Los Suenos. The Jack Crevalle, with its forked tail and lean body, moves easily through the rocks, foraging for food with sharp teeth. It’s known as one of the premier inshore predators, and anglers often try to catch it.

Without the right bait, however, they won’t succeed.

Live Bait

The Jack Crevalle will eat anything that crosses its path. Anglers wanting to lure it away from the reefs, however, should consider using bait that leaves thicker blood trails (such as Squids, Bluefish or Spanish Mackerels).

Artificial Bait

The Jack Crevalle is among the few fish that will greedily attack artificial bait. Choose top-water plugs and skirted jigs for the best results, as these will survive the Jack’s powerful jaws.

Location

The Los Suenos Marina offers the best Jack Crevalle baiting options.

Without the proper bait, however, they will prove difficult to catch.

Live Bait

The Dorado is a predatory breed. It will feast on most small fish, using its sharp teeth to snatch them from reefs or shelves. For best results, though, anglers should use Crabs, Squids, Sardines or Mackerels.

Artificial Bait

The Dorado will respond to artificial bait, if it proves distracting enough. Choose loud poppers and rubber-skirted plugs to draw this creature out.

spanish mackerel fishing los suenos costa ricaThe Spanish Mackerel, with its lean frame and slick scales, is often used as bait. Los Suenos anglers will toss this fish into the water, relying on its oily scent to attract larger prey.

Those wishing to catch the Mackerel, however, must choose a different baiting option.

Live Bait

The Spanish Mackerel is a scavenger, consuming anything in its path. This provides many baiting outlets for anglers. Best results, however, are achieved with smaller, pungent breeds (such as Shrimp, Sardines and Mullets).

Artificial Bait

The Spanish Mackerel, due to its predatory nature, responds well to artificial bait. It will attack spinners, silver spoons and drift jigs as they pass. Keep these items small, thin and brightly colored to attract the most attention.

Location

The Los Suenos Marina boasts the best bait for Spanish Mackerels. There anglers will find many shops that carry both live and artificial options.

grouper fishing los suenos costa ricaHidden among the rocky shores of Los Suenos is the Grouper. This teleost, with its hulking body and powerful jaw, often proves difficult to catch. Its natural caution couples with an endless patience, making it more likely to tuck itself into the dark and just wait for prey to pass.

Costa Rica Fishing Adventures recommends using the best bait to lure it out.

Live Bait

The Grouper doesn’t have a discerning palate and is content to eat most small breeds. For more immediate results, however, choose Cigar Minnows, Squids, Shrimp and Spanish Mackerels.

Artificial Bait

The Grouper is less likely to respond to artificial bait. If no other options are available, though, anglers should choose trolling feathers and skirted jigs. These will provide better deep-casting, as well as increased movement.

Location

Visit the Los Suenos Marina to find all baiting items. Tackle shops, as well as docked charters, will provide essential information and support.

Live Bait

Live bait is typically recommended for Red Snappers. Options like Pilchards, Minnows and Tuna are ideal, offering strong blood trails and sharp movements.

Subject: Choose The Best Bait For Blue Marlins While In Los Suenos

Tags:

blue marlin fishing los suenos costa ricaBlue Marlins circle the Los Suenos shoreline, teasing anglers with their knife-fine teeth and iridescent scales. They represent the best of Costa Rica’s big game fish, and they’re sought throughout the year.

Catching these creatures, however, requires more than top-shelf tackle and proper casting motions. Instead the right bait is needed. Costa Rica Fishing Adventures now offers suggestions on what to choose and where to find it.

Live Bait

Live bait is best when fishing for Blue Marlins, offering strong scents and fresh flavours. Choose oily breeds (like Tuna, Spanish Mackerels or Ballyhoos) that will flail on the line and generate powerful blood trails.

Artificial Bait

Artificial bait is not recommended for Blue Marlins but will suffice if no other option is available. Rely on skirted jigs and poppers. These will be more likely to entice fish, boasting brighter colors and better movement.

Location

To purchase Blue Marlin bait visit the Los Suenos Marina. A variety of tackle shops are available there to offer both live and artificial options.

Subject: Choose Oily Fish While Chumming In Los Suenos
(Posted on Apr 4, 2014 at 08:32PM by Lee Byard)

chumming in los suenos costa ricaTrying to lure fish to the surface is no easy task. Along the coast of Los Suenos are endless hiding places: rocks, shelves and coral reefs. All prove tempting for Striped Marlins and Mahi-Mahis, keeping them tucked away from even the most persistent lines.

Chumming is, therefore, recommended. It provides anglers with greater control, allowing them to more efficiently lead fish to their ships. Without the proper kind of bait, however, this method will fail.

Choose oily fish while chumming in Los Suenos. Slick-scaled creatures (such as Mackerels, Bluefish or Herrings) have stronger scents and flavors. They remain heady, even when exposed to the water for long hours, and will leave more pungent blood trails. This proves essential when trying to lure fish toward a charter boat.

Finding oily bait is a simple task. The Los Suenos Marina boasts many shops and will provide the best available options. Rely on seasoned fishermen to choose chum that is as durable as it is enticing.

Subject: How Does The Current Impact Chumming In Los Suenos?
(Posted on Apr 3, 2014 at 12:51PM by Lee Byard)
Tags:

costa rica current speedFresh bait does not ensure a perfect chumming session and yet Los Suenos anglers often find themselves relying purely on finely chopped hearts, livers and heads. They trust in blood trails and concentrated dispersals, certain that this will be enough.

It’s not.

While fishing in Los Suenos anglers must remember to watch the current, instead of focusing only on the chum.

Current speeds dictate the success of every chumming trip. The average Pacific wave reaches four miles per hour, ensuring a steady clockwise motion. This rate requires less chum, simply because the bait will remain within a limited area and will not float too far from the boat.

During the wet season, however, current speeds can increase in the Pacific and waves can reach up to ten miles per hour. This disturbs the chum, sending it far from the ship and reducing its effectiveness. Use more during these times to compensate.

The importance of fresh bait reigns supreme while chumming in Los Suenos. Never forget, however, to track the current as well.

Subject: Utilize A Chum Bag While Fishing In Los Suenos
(Posted on Apr 1, 2014 at 05:29PM by Lee Byard)
Tags:

chumming in los suenos costa ricaChumming is a common practice. Anglers throughout Los Suenos fling bait into the ocean, releasing long trails of blood and slick to create a feeding frenzy.

Those frenzies prove difficult to contain, however, without the use of a chum bag.

A chum bag, as the name suggests, is intended to house an angler’s chum. It features a cylindrical shape, with tiny holes lining its sides. These holes allow bubbles of bait to escape, creating consistent - and contained - drips.

This is essential while in Los Suenos. Strong currents can easily scatter chum, luring fish away from charters. Bags, however, provide steadier releases and keep the bait centered. This increases every angler’s chances of catching a Marlin, Yellow Fin or Spanish Mackerel.

Utilize chum bags while fishing in Los Suenos. They’ll provide greater control and easier reel-ins.
