The radio data system is a communications method for embedding digital information in conventional FM radio broadcasts. Also called RDS, it works to standardize things like time, station identification, and program information. Originally, this was an invention used by the European Broadcasting Union. In recent years, it has been taken up by the International Electrotechnical Commission. This system in your car is able to carry data at 1,187.5 bits per second. Pretty interesting, right?
Thanks to RDS, you’ll be able to get information like the title and artist of a song that’s playing, provided a station is releasing it when they broadcast. If you love music, you know how awesome it can be to catch the name of a new tune you can’t get out of your head.
