Auto terminology can be confusing, can’t it? Fortunately, the purpose of this blog is to explain it all to you so that you’re as prepared as possible for purchasing your new car or crossover. Today, let’s talk about something you’ll find on the 2018 INFINITI QX30: power steering.
Now, this may be a term you’ve heard a thousand times, and you might generally understand that power steering uses electric and/or hydraulic energy to help you, the driver, turn the wheel. In some instances, the system does nearly all the work based on the response of the tires against the road. In other cases, it merely helps you ease into turns in the direction you’re already headed. Do you know how it works, though?
If you have a hydraulic power steering system, there’s a sensor attached to the wheel that detects force (or torque). It knows if you’ve attempted to turn and the tires aren’t quite moving as you commanded. It orders the vehicle to follow the path you outlined.
There’s also a pump involved, which raises the pressure in the vehicle’s power steering fluid to help things along. A number of valves direct this liquid into the system. It, in turn, helps a series of actuators to move and direct the wheels.
Pretty cool, right? To learn even more about the 2018 QX30, hurry in to your INFINITI of Tacoma dealer in Seattle, Washington, today!Â
