Jaco has forever been a center of surfing. Its high breaks and steady currents tempt sportsmen from across the globe. The 2013 Billabong Festival de Surf brought a new wave of travelers to this small town's sandy shores, however.
The Costa Rican Times reports that 135 of Latin America’s most famed surfers competed in the Billabong Festival from November 9 to November 10. Strong showings from contenders like Gary Saavedra, Diego Cadena and Gilbert Brown thrilled the 5,000 attendees. It was Jaco local Luis Vindas who eventually claimed the top prize, however. He managed a staggering 19.50 score, dominating every a-frame and double-up.
Pacific waves weren’t the only attractions at the 2013 Billabong Festival. Singer Donavon Frankenreiter and his Ojo de Buey band also entertained the crowds with an exclusive marina concert.
