Winter tires boast enhanced rubber compounds that kick into gear when the temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius. They also feature deeper treads that bite through the snow for maximum rubber coverage on road surfaces while simultaneously pushing snow and slush away from the tire. Sipes, which are thin, squiggly grooves in the rubber, collect water and spit it out behind the tire as it rotates. The result is better traction in slippery conditions and improved stopping distances, too.
