In 1896 William Henry Merrill - graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and consulting electrician for the Chicago World’s Fair - launched the Underwriters’ Electric Bureau. This national board was intended to both examine and improve safety within the industrial field. Through it the leading technologies of the time (including arc lamps, rheostats, and fixture insulation joints) were carefully tested, and from these tests came a series of ethical codes and standards.These standards remain today.
The Underwriters’ Electric Bureau - now known as Underwriters’ Laboratories - has served North America for more than a century, helping the commercial and industrial markets improve their operations. It serves as the leading authority on compliance and safety implementation.
