The folks over at Nissan have been up to a little fun. This week, they unveiled how their semi-autonomous ProPilot Assist technology isn't just for cars. 
 
Set in a traditional Japanese inn known as a ryokan, the automaker previewed self-parking slippers, tables and floor cushions much to the surprise of the hotel's visitors. As you can see in the video below, when these items are not in use, they automatically return to their designated spots with the push of the button. This is similar to how Nissan's ProPilot Assist is capable of using the steering, brakes, and throttle to maneuver a vehicle into a space without the brain power or physical input of a driver.
 
 
This isn't the first time that Nissan has applied their technology to inanimate objects. Just last year, they innovated an autonomous chair to help alleviate the strain of waiting in line. When the person at the front of the line stands up to be served, the now-vacant chair moves to the back of the line, so another person can sit down and wait in the queue. Imagine having these chairs at the DMV? Talk about a game-changer!

Traditionally, solar energy has been used to power home appliances during the day, but Nissan’s innovation can collect and store excess energy and use it in the night. It can even be used to charge an all-electric car, like the Leaf, on a cloudy day.
 
Francisco Carranza, Managing Director at Nissan Energy, said the system addresses a substantial and cultivating market. "Solar panels have become the world's fastest-growing source of new energy and we're thrilled to launch Nissan Energy Solar in the UK," he said in a statement. "Over 880,000 UK homes already have solar panels installed and they are seeing the benefits every day, from decreasing electricity bills to increasing property values.”
 
The new technology also includes a home energy management system that will allow users to control how and when they use their energy – and in real time. The result is an entire energy system that’s efficient and sustainable.
 
Nissan Energy Solar starts at £3,881 (roughly $5,300 USD). There are no official plans to launch this in North America, but solar energy advocates are hopeful.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Announces $1 Billion Venture Capital Automotive Fund to Benefit Seattle, World

The world’s premier automotive partnership, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, announced this week the launch of Alliance Ventures. It stands as a new fund determined to invest as much as $1 billion into industry innovation over the course of the next five years.



The venture capital fund’s first year is expected to bring the investment of approximately $200 million in various promising start-ups that focus on the advancement of worldwide mobility, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous systems. By the “midterm” period of the company’s plan—2022—Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi expects to have the largest corporate endowment of its type.



Alliance Ventures will first invest in US-based Ionic Materials. That company is currently dedicated to the development of solid-state, cobalt-free battery materials that could find future use in such Nissan EVs as the zero-emissions LEAF. The 2018 version of that vehicle is set to deliver an all-electric output of 147 HP and 236-lb.-ft. of torque with a driving range of 150 miles on a single charge.

Yesterday at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nissan and NASA Ames Research Center announced the extension and expansion of their collaborative effort to advance autonomous driving services worldwide. The refreshed initiative will pull upon previous work to lead the companies into 2019.

The five-year R&D partnership has seen the two corporations team up to enhance shared technology. It birthed Nissan Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM), a platform for vehicle fleet management that was introduced at CES 2017 and has its origins in NASA research. With this latest phase official and announced, SAM is set to help organize self-driving transportation services ahead of public implementation testing.



On a broader scale, the extended collaboration will evolve the car industry and Nissan Intelligent Mobility, including its “Drive” and “Power” technologies. These include the automaker’s ProPILOT autonomous system and all-electric vehicles such as the upcoming 2018 LEAF. The former includes automatic lane centering as well as the ePedal, which enables operators to accelerate, stop, and go using only one input. The latter is the company’s zero-emissions EV boasting a new 150-mile range.

Nissan is staying busy this month. This week they’re showcasing at CES 2018, but they’re also taking a time out to reveal the future of mobility at the North American International Auto Show, set to run from January 13-28 in Detroit. You can view each of the currently released teasers below.

Current mobility implementations will only continue to get better in the future. This includes the ProPILOT suite of technologies, including Advanced Driving Assistance. This has been integrated into cars such as the 2018 LEAF to measure the speed of surrounding vehicles and automatically adjust your distance to them. It also keeps you centered within a lane. Further, the e-Pedal system enables operators to speed up, slow down, and even stop completely using only the accelerator.

  2. The 2018 Nissan LEAF. This all-new, zero-emissions vehicle will lean on ProPILOT technologies to offer semi-autonomous driving. Additionally, the EV will feature an increased range of 150 miles on one charge, as well as improved power plant output of 147 HP and 236-lb.-ft. of torque.
     
  3. The Nissan IMx. This concept vehicle is poised to change the way you drive. It’s fully autonomous, enabling owners to select the “PD Mode” and kick back and relax. From there, the car hides the steering wheel, reclines the seats, and the computer takes over all functions. More details are unknown at this time, but that may change at the conference!

The system actually reads the owner’s mind, detecting when the driver is thinking of performing a movement (accelerating, braking, or turning the steering wheel) and automatically does that function for them. Also, when put into autonomous mode, the new advancement will also adjust the in-cabin environment by predicting discomfort and using augmented reality to deliver relaxation.



B2V is a world-first system. It works by having the driver wear a brain-wave measuring device. These detections are then analyzed and processed by autonomous technology within the car. This enables it to take actions on your behalf that are 0.2 to 0.5 seconds quicker than you’d be able to manage on your own.
