Ensuring that your vehicle’s tires are properly inflated is important for the overall performance. Under-inflated tires can lead to a lower fuel economy and premature wear. Luckily, there are a few tricks you can do to extend the life expectancy of your set.
First, make sure the caps are always on tight. These do more than keep the air inside. They also prevent dirt and moisture - which can cause leaks - from getting inside the valve. If you have your tires replaced, be sure to remind the mechanics that you want new valve caps as well.
Next, you should routinely check on the air pressure. Temperature changes and unexpected impacts can cause the pressure to fluctuate. During the hotter months, it is recommended that you use a gauge to see where your tires are at once a month. Be sure to do this when they are cold for a more accurate reading.
Finally, beware of the dreaded wet thumb. If you refill your tires at a gas station, you should check to be sure no moisture is coming out of the air pump. Do this by pressing the pin inside the inflator valve with your thumb. If it gets wet, you should alert the clerk immediately and go to another location.
