The World Wildlife Fund, known more commonly as WWF, is an international organization that champions environmental policies. Through its persistent efforts, it has become a beacon of sustainability. Earning its respect is no easy feat.
Costa Rica recently managed to, however.
According to The Fish Site, Costa Rica has pledged to end the overfishing epidemic. The country - along with New Zealand, Argentina, Iceland, the United States and other trade giants - has agreed to ban overcapacity fishing fleets and also refuses to introduce subsidiary programs that endanger waterways.
This is a vital stance toward conservation. As Dr. Pak Efransjah, CEO of WWF Indonesia, explains, “Bad subsidies undermine good management, while good subsidies support management, sustainability and development. (These) guidelines are an important step in the right direction."
Costa Rica’s efforts will help to rebuild marine populations and ensure efficient fishery management. This will have long-lasting impacts on Los Suenos, Jaco and the rest of the Central Pacific.
