billfish fishing los suenos costa ricaEvery year proves exceptional in Los Suenos. Consistent migration patterns and integrated catch-and-release policies ensure ample fishing. Anglers are never without strong hauls and large game.

And they’re also never without the chance to shatter records.

On April 10 the Annual Offshore World Championship came to a close. This tournament - which is among Los Suenos’ premier events and draws heavy crowds from across the globe - celebrates Billfish, with anglers trying to snag Blue Marlins, Black Marlins, Striped Marlins and more. Each year hundreds of creatures are caught.

As the Offshore World Championship ended, however, it was apparent that this number had grown.

Almost 2400 Billfish were reeled in at this tournament, with over 700 captured on day three alone. This decimated previous records and helped to usher in the most successful championship in Los Suenos’ history. Team standings soared and individual charter ships boasted impressive tallies. It was an extraordinary competition.

Costa Rica Fishing Adventures predicts that next year’s will prove even better.

white marlin los suenos costa ricaOn March 15, Costa Rica Fishing Adventures was happy to announce the astonishing news of a White Marlin sighting in Los Suenos.

Now we’re even happier to announce that the sighting has been verified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), the world’s largest angling organization.

According to the recent reports, the IGFA has confirmed the authenticity of the White Marlin. This fish - which was caught by New Yorkers Bob and Karen Weaver and required over two hours to reel in - has never been properly documented, with no proven photographs or videos. With the release of these images, however, history has been made in Los Suenos.

world record fishing los suenos costa ricaFlorida-native Ward Michaels sailed into Costa Rica, hoping for exceptional weather and ample fishing. It was not his first trip. He had instead visited the Central Pacific region dozens of times, always trying to earn a prize but never quite succeeding.

This has finally changed.

The Costa Rican Times reports that, on March 19, Michaels snagged a massive 60 pound Snook along the Los Suenos shoreline. This fish, as seen pictured here, has captured the attention of the entire sporting world - and rightfully so. Its weight surpasses the previous record-holder (a 57 pound Black Snook caught in 1991) and it will potentially be registered with the International Game Fish Association.

This registration relies on weight verification, a process that can take weeks. Michaels remains certain that his Snook will pass, however. “People in Costa Rica are working on it," he stated. "It’ll require a lot of paperwork but it’ll get done.”

marlin fishing los suenos costa ricaLos Suenos is famed for its Marlins. Blue, Striped and Black varieties hide in the deep waters, tempting anglers with their massive bodies and sharp teeth. They’re hard to catch but easy to spot.

A recent White Marlin sighting, however, has even the most dedicated sport fisherman impressed.

On March 13 the Tico Times released photos of a White Marlin. This fish - which is a sub-breed of the Blue Marlin, with an elongated body and high dorsal fins - is rare. Few have ever been reported, and almost none of this particular coloring have been captured.

The White Marlin - which was caught, and subsequently released, by Captain Juan Carlos Zamora of the Spanish Fly - features no blue or black striping. Its pigmentation is instead completely pale, marking it as unique. Speculation quickly arose as to whether this fish could be an albino, but an examination of its eyes revealed that it was without that particular trait.

This creature is among Los Suenos’ most distinctive and most famous.

los suenos signature triple crown 2014The announcement of the first Los Suenos Signature Triple Crown series was met with much excitement in 2013. Anglers across the globe readied their rods in anticipation, and the Central Pacific prepared for an onslaught of deep sea and near-shore expeditions.

Those preparations weren’t enough - because the 2014 Los Suenos Signature Triple Crown shattered records again and again.

According to the Tico Times, the first leg of this race boasted over 90 catches per hour. Forty two teams raced though the Pacific, snagging Marlins, Sailfish and other creatures. This pace was incredible and refused to slow, even as the second and third legs began.

By the end of the series, over 2,100 fish had been caught (and released, as required by Costa Rican law). This created a success rate of over 50%, a number previously thought impossible. Joint efforts between the teams resulted in the most successful fishing tournament in Los Suenos’ history.

This is certain to secure another series in 2015.

fishing in los suenos costa ricaAmerica's eastern seaboard is noted for its exceptional fishing. Access to Cods and Pollocks isn’t enough to keep U.S. anglers at home, however. They’re instead relocating to the sunny shores of Los Suenos.

According to a recent Costa Rican Times article, American sport fishermen - such as Pete Wagner, Captain of the Hyper Striper - are sailing to the Central Pacific. There they expect to find Marlins, Groupers, Wahoos and more.

Their expectations are well-founded. Los Suenos is famed for its fishing and even winter seasons prove fruitful. Charter ships consistently report strong hauls, allowing anglers to sample surfcasting, trolling, spin-reeling and more. It's a mecca of rods and reels.

Captain Wagner, as well as other American anglers, will soon be filling their fish wells.
