yellowfin tuna fishing los suenos costa ricaIt was the week of the Yellowfin.

New breeds arrived to Los Suenos, tempting inshore and off-shore anglers alike with steady hauls and challenging reel-ins.

From April 20 to April 25 Los Suenos experienced a swell of Yellowfin Tuna. These creatures stayed near the coast, forcing most charters to maneuver through the reefs and rocks. The effort proved worthwhile, however, as crews captured fish after fish.

Near-shore anglers weren't the only ones with jumping lines, however. Those sailing away from the marina instead discovered schools of Sailfish and Tuna, ensuring some exciting catches. The averages were slightly lower than previous months, but dropping temperatures always have that effect. The totals should rise after the Rainy Season passes.

los suenos fishing reportLast week records were shattered throughout Los Suenos. The Offshore World Championship brought hundreds of anglers and thousands of lines, and the frantic pace led to some truly remarkable catches.

During the week of April 11 to April 19, however, the fishing in Los Suenos dropped to a more sedate standard. There were fewer ships in the water and many migration patterns changed, with Blue Marlins, Black Marlins and other large breeds steering themselves away from the coast. Anglers arriving for some Springtime sporting still found themselves impressed, though.

Roosterfish and Mahi-Mahis proved to be the most popular breeds this week. Charters reported steady hauls and every day yielded an average of fifteen catches per expedition. This combined with high temperatures and strong breezes for vacation-worthy experiences.

The rainy season is soon to begin and many anglers may fear a decrease in fish. This year has been exceptional, however, and Los Suenos should be able to survive the storms.

billfish fishing los suenos costa ricaEvery year proves exceptional in Los Suenos. Consistent migration patterns and integrated catch-and-release policies ensure ample fishing. Anglers are never without strong hauls and large game.

And they’re also never without the chance to shatter records.

On April 10 the Annual Offshore World Championship came to a close. This tournament - which is among Los Suenos’ premier events and draws heavy crowds from across the globe - celebrates Billfish, with anglers trying to snag Blue Marlins, Black Marlins, Striped Marlins and more. Each year hundreds of creatures are caught.

As the Offshore World Championship ended, however, it was apparent that this number had grown.

Almost 2400 Billfish were reeled in at this tournament, with over 700 captured on day three alone. This decimated previous records and helped to usher in the most successful championship in Los Suenos’ history. Team standings soared and individual charter ships boasted impressive tallies. It was an extraordinary competition.

Costa Rica Fishing Adventures predicts that next year’s will prove even better.

On April 6 the Offshore Tournament began, with charter crews seeking out Blue Marlins, Sailfish and more. They found them, with almost 800 billfish snagged on just the first day! That surpasses the total amount of fish caught and released during all of last year’s event.

As the tournament has continued ships like the Dream Maker and Los Suenos have tallied high totals, with 826 Sailfish, 18 Dorados and 3 Blue Marlins snatched on April 8 alone.

This fishing season is proving to be exceptional and, as the IGFA World Championship comes to a close, Costa Rica Fishing Adventures knows that other records are sure to be broken.

los suenos fishing reportApril has finally arrived and it’s brought new fish to Los Suenos instead of its proverbial showers.

During the week of March 29 to April 4 anglers were greeted by rising temperatures and increased migration. Inshore fishermen experienced an influx of Tuna, earning high numbers with every charter tour. Deep-sea enthusiasts were also impressed, reeling in an excess of Blue Marlins, Dorados and Sailfish. Now we’re even happier to announce that the sighting has been verified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), the world’s largest angling organization.

According to the recent reports, the IGFA has confirmed the authenticity of the White Marlin. los suenos fishing reportMarch is coming to an end but the fishing in Los Suenos proves better than ever. Steady catches and rising temperatures have made this a Spring to remember.

From March 23 to March 28 anglers experienced exceptional fishing. Both in-shore and near-shore fans reported high numbers, with charter tours averaging almost 50 fish per trip. Jack Crevalles and Sailfish dominated every deck, and occasional Blue Marlins appeared to add some excitement as well.

Powerful North winds arrived early in the week, creating choppy waters and less than ideal sailing conditions. They quickly passed, however, and all fish celebrated by arriving to the surface. A feeding frenzy awaited every angler.

world record fishing los suenos costa ricaFlorida-native Ward Michaels sailed into Costa Rica, hoping for exceptional weather and ample fishing. It was not his first trip. He had instead visited the Central Pacific region dozens of times, always trying to earn a prize but never quite succeeding.

This has finally changed.

The Costa Rican Times reports that, on March 19, Michaels snagged a massive 60 pound Snook along the Los Suenos shoreline. This fish, as seen pictured here, has captured the attention of the entire sporting world - and rightfully so. Its weight surpasses the previous record-holder (a 57 pound Black Snook caught in 1991) and it will potentially be registered with the International Game Fish Association.

This registration relies on weight verification, a process that can take weeks. Michaels remains certain that his Snook will pass, however. “People in Costa Rica are working on it," he stated. "It’ll require a lot of paperwork but it’ll get done.”

During the week of March 14 to March 22 temperatures soared, drawing Sailfish, Groupers and Dolphin Fish to the surface. Snagging these creatures proved easy, with charter crews noting impressive hauls. Every catch-and-release trip was a success, with ships averaging over 30 fish each day.

Those looking for large breeds were not disappointed. A massive 70 pound Wahoo was reported by the Wett Ryder and her crew, while anglers on the Sweet Dreams snatched a 40 pound Dorado. Similar catches are sure to come as the temperatures continue to rise.
