Fishing Costa Rica - join us on a sport fishing adventure of a lifetime.

los suenos grouperFirst-time fishermen may find themselves eager to touch their catches. Snagging a Grouper or Gar in Los Suenos is a momentous occasion, and many wish to celebrate it by posing for the cameras.

This is perfectly acceptable, as long as the slime coat is left in tact.

While on catch-and-release charters in Los Suenos anglers must be aware of the slime coat and take great care not to disturb it. This thin layer of mucuproteins covers a fish’s entire body, providing a barrier against the Pacific’s many microscopic dangers: such as bacteria, ammonia, fungal growths or parasites. It seals the skin and promotes quicker healing.

Without it a fish will succumb to the water.

It’s important, therefore, to never touch a Los Suenos fish with bare hands. Use gloves that are soaked in aloe (this helps to encourage new slime coat growth) and never take a catch from the water for more than sixty seconds. Keep the creature submerged and as comfortable as possible.

los suenos fish gillsThe anatomy of every Los Suenos fish is defined by spiny bones and cartilage. Every organ works to propel these creatures through the water.

Without gill filaments, however, those organs wouldn’t be able properly function.

Gill filaments, simply explained, are protein chains within a fish’s throat. They contain a network of capillaries and blood vessels, which allow Marlins, Mackerels and more to survive while underwater. They carefully separate oxygen from carbon dioxide, sending essential gasses to the gills and expelling any unnecessary ions. This is known as scaffolding, referring to how it builds the foundation of the breathing process.

Without gill filaments a Los Suenos fish would not be able to function in the water. These chains help to support healthy lung capacities, as well as impact the nervous and circulatory systems. They are essential.

Those taking an edible charter tour will be able to see these filaments once their catches are cut open. Examine the throat to find a vast network.

Subject: Is The Swim Bladder Found In All Los Suenos Fish?

swim bladder in los suenos fishNot all fish are created equal. This is proven by the presence - or lack of presence - of the swim bladder.

The swim bladder is a gas-filled sac. It’s meant to control buoyancy, with air rapdily expanding and retreating within its walls. This pattern of contractions allows a fish to navigate the changing water depths with greater ease.

It’s not, however, essential and is often not found in Los Suenos breeds.

Those fishing in Los Suenos should not be surprised by the lack of a swim bladder. Many marine creatures - specifically those that are lobed or cartilaginous - are born without this sac. This is because their fin structures naturally accommodate depth changes and an internal organ isn’t required. Many edible options, such as the Spanish Mackerel or the Ray, have evolved beyond the need for one. Cutting them open will just reveal the dorsal spine.

Remember that while sailing and don't fret if no bladder is found. There is nothing wrong with the fish. It simply has no need for this particular sac.

fish scales los suenos costa ricaLos Suenos fish are regarded as extraordinary. Their colors, patterns and striations rank among the best in the world; and the sheer variety of scale designs makes every charter trip a unique experience.

It’s important, therefore, to understand the types of scales found on Los Suenos fish. To properly admire them anglers should learn why they look the way they do.

Placoid: Placoids are plate-like formations, with rough edges and dentin textures. They are most commonly seen on Sharks and Skates.

Ganoid: Ganoids are diamond-shaped scales that connect through intricate socketing. They are most commonly found on Gars and Sturgeons.

Cycloid: Cycloids are flat, oval-shaped scales that feature growth rings (circular patterns that spiral out from the head to the tail). They are most commonly seen on Salmon and Carps.

Ctenoid: Ctenoids are calcium-composed scales that also feature growth rings (although their edges are rougher than Cycloids). They are most commonly found on Rays and Perches.

los suenos fishLos Suenos fish may not smile on the line, but anglers can still use their mouths to identify them.

Each breed boasts a specific type of mouth, with its position reflecting how it hunts, eats and nests. Learn the most common configurations to understand more about the fish in Los Suenos.

Terminal: the terminal mouth is centered and often elongated. It allows mid-dwelling fish, like Blue Marlins, to attack their prey head-on and accommodates many rows of teeth.

Superior: the superior mouth is upturned and highly positioned. It allows surface-feeders, like Red Snappers, to more easily skim the currents for food.

Inferior: the inferior mouth is downcast and wide. It allows bottom-feeders, like Flounder, to scoop up food more efficiently.

Note these distinctive mouth shapes while fishing in Los Suenos and choose the appropriate tackle options.

types of fish in los suenosEvery fish in Los Suenos is uniquely shaped, a collection of brightly colored fins, scales and tails. The Central Pacific boasts some of the world’s most beautiful breeds, and anglers often wish to identify them all.

Doing this requires an understanding of basic anatomy, starting with body types.

Fusiform: medium-boned fish with pointed heads, forked tails and evenly scaled fins. Consider Mackerels and Tuna.

Streamlined: massive fish with ovoid bodies and long fins. Consider Marlins and Swordfish.

Filiform: long-bodied fish with extended snouts and bullet-like heads. Consider Pipefish and Pikes.

Vermiform: short-framed fish with thin scales and rounded heads. Consider Minnows and Sardines.

fish in los suenos costa ricaThe most important feature of a Los Suenos fish is not its size, teeth or color. Its fins instead reign supreme.

These spiny-boned limbs propel every Marlin, Sailfish and Permit through the water. They allow them to fight against the line, and they directly impact speed and stamina. They make sport fishing both exciting and frustrating.

Anglers should, therefore, learn their names.

Pectoral Fins: fins found on the side of each fish, allowing them to move quickly through the water at even great depths.

Pelvic Fins: fins located beneath the pectorals that control a fish’s range of motion, specifically upward and downward movements.

Dorsal Fins: fins that rest along the spine, effecting a fish’s ability to turn.

Anal Fins: fins found just beneath the anus, controlling stability and balance.

Caudal Fins: fins that serve as the tail, providing the main source of propulsion.

A Los Suenos fish uses all of these fins to navigate the Pacific. Anglers should take note of each limb to better understand how these breeds move and how powerful they’ll prove to be.

Subject: Use An Extra Heavy Fishing Rod In Los Suenos
(Posted on May 3, 2014 at 01:22PM by Lee Byard)

los suenos fishing rodSize does matter in Los Suenos.

Anglers looking to snag large game breeds, like the Striped Marlin or the Giant Grouper, need proper support. The rods they choose must be durable, powerful and able to withstand Costa Rica’s most frantic fighters.

Use an extra heavy rod, therefore, while in Los Suenos.

These options - which feature lure weights of over 40 pounds and line sizes of over 8 ounces - are essential for sport fishing. Their rugged shapes and sturdy mounts survive the strain of large fish, and their extended lengths provide more accurate casting. Super fast actions and a resistance to tapering helps to ensure success as well.

It should be noted that extra heavy rods aren’t intended for casual fishing trips. These should instead be used for large game hunts and charter crews should be consulted while setting them up.
