Across the globe, work is underway to leverage the power of Nissan Intelligent Mobility by providing a sustainable energy system to a boarding school in Pretoria, South Africa. Nissan has partnered with Filadelfia School to improve its access to reliable electricity and increase the use of renewable energy. This initiative is part of the automaker’s commitment to advancing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

According to Nissan, the national grid provides energy access to 85 percent of the population; however, capacity and connection constraints often mean that the school experiences several outages a month that can last from a few hours to a full day. With a student body of 400 disabled youths ranging from 14- to 21-years old, these unscheduled energy blackouts cause a significant amount of disruption to Filadelfia School.

To help combat the issue, Nissan is using a combination of second-life batteries from Leaf all-electric vehicles and solar panels to provide the school with a sustainable energy system that helps mitigate the impact of electricity shortages in the community. Now when faced with a blackout, the students can continue on with their scheduled activities in a safe manner by tapping into the power provided by the renewal energy source.
