fishing los suenosCosta Rica is known for more than being a world-renowned fishing destination. On top of offering a host of top-notch spots for sport fishermen, the region is a haven for travellers searching for natural, untouched beauty.

For visitors with a wanderlust and a ready rod, a charter fishing trip to Costa's Rica's Cocos Island is a must-do trip. If you've ever wondered how it would feel to be the only soul on a desert island, Cocos Island can help put your curiosity to rest. The uninhabited isle, about 500 kilometres from Costa Rica's Pacific side, is one of the country's national parks and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After spending some time fishing along the western coast in Los Suenos or Jaco, make the relatively short trip into the depths of the Pacific. Aside from its beautiful virgin beaches, the waters around Cocos are a haven for hammerhead sharks, according to Marlin magazine. And while the island's park and heritage statuses mean the surrounding waters are protected, Costa Rica's sport fishermen can wander a mere eight miles from the isle's beaches to find premier striped Marlin fishing territory.

Costa Rica fishingThe waters around Costa Rica have once again been hailed as an idyllic spot for casual and serious sport fishermen alike.

According to a recent feature in The Costa Rica News, the country's central Pacific region is celebrated the world over for its high-quality excursions.

The area has racked up numerous accolades, including more than 80 fishing records as well as a number of sportfishing records from the International Game Fish Association.

The popular pasttime can be divided into two types: inshore and offshore. Visitors can participate in both, particularly around scenic beach villages such as Manuel Antonio and Jaco.

Inshore fishing is defined as fishing in shallow waters at a depth of less than 30 metres. This type is often the preferred option for more casual fishermen, as less equipment is required, making it far less expensive than its deep-sea counterpart.

Offshore fishing is obviously the opposite—sport fishermen trek out into deeper waters on the hunt for bigger prey. And the adventurous sportsmen who try tackling offshore can expect to see more big game. Those with a fierce competitive side or looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience can take on the task in hopes of landing a mammoth Marlin or Sailfish.

los suenos fishingThe World Wildlife Fund, known more commonly as WWF, is an international organization that champions environmental policies. Through its persistent efforts, it has become a beacon of sustainability. Earning its respect is no easy feat.

Costa Rica recently managed to, however.

According to The Fish Site, Costa Rica has pledged to end the overfishing epidemic. The country - along with New Zealand, Argentina, Iceland, the United States and other trade giants - has agreed to ban overcapacity fishing fleets and also refuses to introduce subsidiary programs that endanger waterways.

This is a vital stance toward conservation. As Dr. Pak Efransjah, CEO of WWF Indonesia, explains, “Bad subsidies undermine good management, while good subsidies support management, sustainability and development. (These) guidelines are an important step in the right direction."

Costa Rica’s efforts will help to rebuild marine populations and ensure efficient fishery management. This will have long-lasting impacts on Los Suenos, Jaco and the rest of the Central Pacific.

fishing los suenosShark finning is a process condemned throughout the world - both for its cruelty and its damning population effects. Within the last decade fishermen have decimated entire pods, and the Pacific Ocean has been severely impacted.

A Tico Times article proves that Costa Rica will no longer stand for such atrocities.

On November 28, 2013, the Tico Times reported that Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla recently closed private docks in the Puntarenas region. These docks had previously served as gateways to finning expeditions, with fishermen flocking to their open waters and lax legislations. There over 90% of local breeds were routinely slaughtered.

Chinchilla was horrified, banning not only the use of the docks but the process of finning itself - and her actions have been noted.

The international organization Sharkproject has named Chinchilla “Shark Guardian of the Year”, lauding her efforts and encouraging others to follow her example. Her stance on both conservational and marine laws has made her a beacon of progress. Through her Costa Rica's creatures can be saved.

los suenos costa ricaThe heart of the Costa Rica beats Pacific blue.

Deep sea tourism dominates the Central region, with thousands of anglers arriving to the Los Suenos and Jaco areas throughout the year. Charter services fuel the economy, and preserving that income has become the goal of fishermen and advocates alike.

That goal recently became obtainable.

According to Costa Rica News, the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture and the Foundation for the Development and the Promotion of Research and Transfer Agricultural Technology of Costa Rica have banded together to create a sustainable initiative. This initiative seeks to bring in private companies, who will then offer grants for extensive marine development. These companies will help to stimulate local industries, as well as strengthen conservation laws.

Through this act the Costa Rican economy can be fortified, with six areas (Palito-Montero, Horse Island, Golfo Dulce, San Juanillo, Medlar and Tarcoles) already reaping the benefits.
