This week, Nissan lifted the cover off some huge news. The automaker will be releasing the Leaf e+ later this year and it will sport an all-new electric powertrain with additional range and power.

The name â€œe+â€ refers to the EVâ€™s increased energy density from the model's 62 kWh battery pack and the higher output of its powertrain. Combined, the e+ can travel up to 226 miles on a single charge, which is a big increase over the current modelâ€™s 150-mile range. Three trims will be made available: S PLUS, SV PLUS and SL PLUS.

The higher capacity battery will also be complemented by a more potent 160 kW motor, which will produce 45 percent more power and 250 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration will be quicker too, jetting from 50 mph to 75 mph nearly 13 percent faster. According to Nissan, top speeds will increase by approximately 10 percent, making way for more comfortable highway cruising. As for charging, it will be managed by a new 70 kW Quick Charge System, which wonâ€™t require any additional time over the current model, even with the 55-percent larger battery storage capacity.
