Designed to slow down and significantly reduce vibrations from the coil spring mechanism, these specialty shock absorbers can sometimes be referred to as dampers. They operate by converting kinetic energy into thermal energy via something known as fluid friction.
 

Fluid friction decreases the speed at which the oil flow is traveling. It does this using valve passages located inside the damper that are made to stifle vibrations from the start. This process can cause the shock absorbers to heat up between 100- and 120-degrees Celsius.
