A transfer case is only found on 4x4 vehicles. Basically, it receives the power from the engine and transmission and moves it to the front and rear axles. The process can require additional steps, depending on the type of drivetrain.Â
In part-time 4x4 systems, like those offered on most Jeeps, the transfer cases only move power to the rear or front axle unless the driver or the onboard computer activates AWD. Others have low-range gears you can select when needing extra torque for towing or off-road performance.Â
Vehicles can differ in the way that they handle all-wheel-drive selection. Some have a manual shifter, and others rely on an automatic system that switches between 4x2 and 4x4 when it senses the need for additional traction. Shift-on-the-fly units, like those on Ram trucks, can change to AWD while the vehicle is in motion.Â
