Traction and stability control systems can help drivers retain command of their car or truck on slippery surfaces. How do these critical components work?Â
Traction and stability control use the same sensors as anti-lock braking. The embedded system knows when the wheels are slipping and unable to grip the surface. Most often, this happens due to snow or ice, but it can also occur because of rain, oil, or gravel on the pavement. Off-road vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler also rely on these tools.Â
Traction control stops power from going to the spinning wheel. Instead, it transfers torque to the other tires. They can then move the vehicle out of the slippery area.Â
Stability control is very similar, except it involves additional sensors in the steering wheel. It applies the brakes and transfers torque to limit spinning, but it also distributes energy to push the vehicle in the direction you intend to go.Â
