The Weberian Apparatus is a series of small bones tucked behind a fish’s skull. These bones connect the inner ear to the swim bladder, tunneling vibrations through the body. This allows every Minnow, Mackerel and Loach to hear underwater; and too often it is the reason an angler will find himself unable to snag a catch.

Marine creatures are extremely sensitive to sound, with the Weberian Apparatus allowing them to distinguish unique vibrations from miles away. It’s recommended, therefore, to remain as quiet as possible while on a charter trip. Reduce engine noise and be cautious when casting lines. First-time fishermen may find themselves eager to touch their catches. Snagging a Grouper or Gar in Los Suenos is a momentous occasion, and many wish to celebrate it by posing for the cameras.

This is perfectly acceptable, as long as the slime coat is left in tact.

While on catch-and-release charters in Los Suenos anglers must be aware of the slime coat and take great care not to disturb it. This thin layer of mucuproteins covers a fish’s entire body, providing a barrier against the Pacific’s many microscopic dangers: such as bacteria, ammonia, fungal growths or parasites. It seals the skin and promotes quicker healing.

Without it a fish will succumb to the water.

It’s important, therefore, to never touch a Los Suenos fish with bare hands. Use gloves that are soaked in aloe (this helps to encourage new slime coat growth) and never take a catch from the water for more than sixty seconds. Keep the creature submerged and as comfortable as possible.

Without gill filaments, however, those organs wouldn’t be able properly function.

Gill filaments, simply explained, are protein chains within a fish’s throat. They contain a network of capillaries and blood vessels, which allow Marlins, Mackerels and more to survive while underwater. They carefully separate oxygen from carbon dioxide, sending essential gasses to the gills and expelling any unnecessary ions. This is known as scaffolding, referring to how it builds the foundation of the breathing process.

Without gill filaments a Los Suenos fish would not be able to function in the water. These chains help to support healthy lung capacities, as well as impact the nervous and circulatory systems. They are essential.

Not all fish are created equal. This is proven by the presence - or lack of presence - of the swim bladder.

The swim bladder is a gas-filled sac. It’s meant to control buoyancy, with air rapdily expanding and retreating within its walls. This pattern of contractions allows a fish to navigate the changing water depths with greater ease.

It’s not, however, essential and is often not found in Los Suenos breeds.

Those fishing in Los Suenos should not be surprised by the lack of a swim bladder. Many marine creatures - specifically those that are lobed or cartilaginous - are born without this sac. This is because their fin structures naturally accommodate depth changes and an internal organ isn’t required. Many edible options, such as the Spanish Mackerel or the Ray, have evolved beyond the need for one. Cutting them open will just reveal the dorsal spine.

Remember that while sailing and don't fret if no bladder is found. There is nothing wrong with the fish. It simply has no need for this particular sac.
