The Main Circuit was dreamed up and brought to life thanks to a professional racecar driver known as Jacques Villeneuve. Built to flow with the natural terrain, this sixteen-turn course takes participants through elevation changes similar to that of a country road. You can expect a change of 109 metres (357 feet) per lap. Meanwhile, the straightaways are lengthy enough to really get those tires spinning at higher speeds - the longest being 800 metres (0.5 miles).

At the beginning of February 2016, construction began. It was completed quite quickly, and the track opened up to racers on August 30, 2016. Now, our annual Track Day Event takes place here every June.

There is also another course that is shorter (1.21 km instead of 4.83 km), but it has 20 turns. This is known as the Kart Circuit. It is also smaller in size with a track width of 8 metres instead of 12.2 metres.

The team at Skaha Ford is thrilled to share some beginner tips for having a fun (and safe) day this coming June.

If you have been following along with this series of articles, then you are ready for step 3 of preparations for the big day. Most seasoned drivers recommend bringing along a few tools to ensure that you can make changes or adjustments to your car quickly and efficiently. A comprehensive kit for the racetrack can include the following items:

  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Jack
  • Wheel gun/brace
  • Wheel socket
  • Adjustable spanners (or a set)
  • Cable ties

Most of these things are self-explanatory. However, the cable ties can be used to secure a loose hose or anything that might drop/hang down.

Once you get started on the track, you should remember to pace yourself and take frequent breaks. It will be an exhilarating experience, and you don’t want to burn out too quickly. Finally, don’t go too fast. Remember that this isn’t a race. Always maintain a speed that you are comfortable with as a novice.

However, if you follow these guidelines, you will be able to complete the event safely while having a blast at the same time.

The night before and the morning of, you should take the time to check your vehicle. Tire pressure is one of the most important things. Ensuring that there is no leak can keep you out of the gravel.

If you intend to drive your racer to Area 27 for the Track Day Event in Oliver, BC, then you should drop the tire pressure before you get on the circuit. The average tire pressure for the racetrack is about 29PSI. However, a higher PSI is needed to safely drive on the street. You can see your owner’s manual for the precise number.

Another tip to remember is that a clockwise track will cause tire pressure to rise more rapidly on the left-hand tires than the right-hand ones. You should also take the time to check the oil, fuel, and water levels before you take off.

Beginners needn’t worry as long as you take these tips into consideration.

Never try to overtake other vehicles while going through corners. Instead, focus on turning, braking, and hitting the apex correctly. This will ensure a safe and polite run. Spatial awareness is key if you want successfully overtake someone. Always pass on a straight and make sure that the other driver knows you’re there before moving up.

Do not tailgate. Some cars are faster in corners and slower in the straights and vice versa. If you are too close to another racer, you won’t be able to concentrate on your own braking. It’s also dangerous.

Be sure to warm your car before the run. Cold brakes and tires can lead to a crash in your first lap, which you definitely don’t want to do. Finally, keep in mind that this is not a race. It is a friendly event for everyone to enjoy. Sure, you probably want to be the quickest car on the track, but that’s not the goal at the end of the day.

If you have never participated in something like this before, this information will be vital to you having a good time.

Although the venue - Area 27 - will have lunch, it is always recommended that you bring beverages and snacks. Gatorade is a fan favourite as it keeps you hydrated throughout the day. Bottled water is another great option, and you can keep your items inside an ice cooler. We suggest one on wheels for your convenience.

To protect yourself from the sun - as this event will take place in the middle of summer - don’t forget to wear (and bring) sunscreen. A high SPF is best. Lip balm, sunglasses, a hat, and a towel are also great items to have on your list.

If you are not used to being around loud noises for an extended period of time, you may want to bring along some aspirin. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help with headaches. Finally, a long sleeve shirt is good to have on hand.

While some attendees are well-seasoned veterans, first-timers are also welcome. If you have been to this invitational in the past, the following information is a simple reminder. If you have never participated in this type of race, then you may need to take notes on what to bring in order to stay comfortable.

First, don’t forget your camera. The most popular one for Track Day events is the GoPro since it can be easily attached to a helmet or dashboard. However, your smartphone will work well too if you don’t have one of these tiny cams.

Another thing you don’t want to forget is a foldable chair. It can be a collapsible seat or one you use at the beach. Either will serve their purpose well. In between race sessions, you may want to sit down. Since this event is happening in the summer, moving your own chair into a shaded area is best. You can also bring a portable fan and cooling packs to beat the heat.
