Subject: Rare White Marlin Caught In Los Suenos

marlin fishing los suenos costa ricaLos Suenos is famed for its Marlins. Blue, Striped and Black varieties hide in the deep waters, tempting anglers with their massive bodies and sharp teeth. They’re hard to catch but easy to spot.

A recent White Marlin sighting, however, has even the most dedicated sport fisherman impressed.

On March 13 the Tico Times released photos of a White Marlin. This fish - which is a sub-breed of the Blue Marlin, with an elongated body and high dorsal fins - is rare. Few have ever been reported, and almost none of this particular coloring have been captured.

The White Marlin - which was caught, and subsequently released, by Captain Juan Carlos Zamora of the Spanish Fly - features no blue or black striping. Its pigmentation is instead completely pale, marking it as unique. Speculation quickly arose as to whether this fish could be an albino, but an examination of its eyes revealed that it was without that particular trait.

This creature is among Los Suenos’ most distinctive and most famous.

los suenos fishing reportMarch has arrived to Los Suenos, bringing with it rising temperatures and steady migration patterns. Calm currents proved perfect for the first week, keeping big-game fish near the surface and helping anglers snag some truly impressive hauls.

During the week of March 1 to March 6 anglers saw an influx of fish, specifically Sailfish and Blue Marlins. These creatures were found in abundance around the Los Suenos shoreline, as well as close to nearby Tortuga Island. Improved weather conditions were cited for the sudden increase of big-game.

Groupers were also spotted near shore, arriving earlier than anticipated. They were a welcomed sight for anglers, however, and bolstered overall catch counts.

March is already poised to rival February's exceptional hauls. Contact Costa Rica Fishing Adventures to learn more about this Los Suenos season. Ask us also about our charters and accommodations.

los suenos fishing reportFebruary has come to an impressive end in Los Suenos. Throughout its final week it offered anglers consistent catches, making this one of the most successful months in memory.

From February 21 to February 28, Los Suenos experienced a rise in Sailfish, Dorados and Groupers. Charter ships reported steady numbers each day, with big-game breeds proving easy to find. A strong breeding surge kept the populations steady, and anglers were able to secure some truly spectacular catches.

Powerful winds proved troublesome during the month’s final days, causing unusually high tides. Los Suenos’ experienced charter crews were up to the challenge, though, and helped anglers reel in some massive Billfish.

February offered exceptional sport fishing. March will, hopefully, do the same.

los suenos costa rica fishing reportFebruary is proving to be an exceptional month for big game fishing. Anglers arriving to Los Suenos are reeling in high numbers, and charter tours are reporting successful deep sea and near-shore excursions - daily.

During the week of February 15 to February 20, large breeds continued to dominate the Los Suenos coastline. Ships like the Dream II and the Barnacle reported strong hourly hauls, snagging Sailfish, Dorados and Wahoos in the open sea.

Those preferring near-shore activities were also pleased. Exceptional weather conditions made Crevalle fishing both easy and exciting. These wide-boned creatures were pulled onto nearly every deck, and anglers were noting consistent catches throughout the week.

laura chinchilla costa rica fishing lawsSustainability defines many of Costa Rica’s recent legislations. As urged by President Laura Chinchilla, the country has shifted its political and environmental policies, blending them together to protect the dynamic ecosystems found within each region.

The Tico Times now reports that Chinchilla is taking yet another step toward conservation.

On February 17, 2014, it was announced that Chinchilla - with help from the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, the Costa Rican Fisheries Institute and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Organization of the Central American Isthmus - has created stricter fishing regulations. Fish Aggregating Devices, known commonly as FADs and used to target specific creatures (such as Marlins or Tunas), are no longer permitted. All charters must instead limit their practices, complying with catch and release laws and maintaining specified breed standards.

Chinchilla’s actions have been praised within the environmental community. Through this FADs ban Costa Rica will spare itself the ecological horror of overfishing, which decimates breed populations, damages eco-systems and harms local businesses. These regulations will ensure a safer - and more vibrant - Pacific.

los suenos signature triple crown 2014The announcement of the first Los Suenos Signature Triple Crown series was met with much excitement in 2013. Anglers across the globe readied their rods in anticipation, and the Central Pacific prepared for an onslaught of deep sea and near-shore expeditions.

Those preparations weren’t enough - because the 2014 Los Suenos Signature Triple Crown shattered records again and again.

According to the Tico Times, the first leg of this race boasted over 90 catches per hour. Forty two teams raced though the Pacific, snagging Marlins, Sailfish and other creatures. This pace was incredible and refused to slow, even as the second and third legs began.

By the end of the series, over 2,100 fish had been caught (and released, as required by Costa Rican law). This created a success rate of over 50%, a number previously thought impossible. Joint efforts between the teams resulted in the most successful fishing tournament in Los Suenos’ history.

This is certain to secure another series in 2015.

los suenos fishing reportThe traditional Valentine’s celebration calls for chocolate and roses. Those visiting Los Suenos, however, will find decidedly different treats. Prepare for deep sea and inshore bounties.

From February 6 to February 14, charter crews reported record hauls. An excess of Sailfish and Blue Marlins was found away from shore, with ships like the Dream Maker and the Wett Ryder noting hourly catches. Several Groupers were also spotted, creating some truly memorable chases.

Off-shore fishing wasn’t the only sport of choice this week, however. Instead those sailing near the marina discovered strong schools of Jack Crevalles, Roosterfish and Red Snappers. Reef fishing and bottom fishing proved very successful.

fishing in los suenos costa ricaAmerica's eastern seaboard is noted for its exceptional fishing. Access to Cods and Pollocks isn’t enough to keep U.S. anglers at home, however. They’re instead relocating to the sunny shores of Los Suenos.

According to a recent Costa Rican Times article, American sport fishermen - such as Pete Wagner, Captain of the Hyper Striper - are sailing to the Central Pacific. There they expect to find Marlins, Groupers, Wahoos and more.

Their expectations are well-founded. Los Suenos is famed for its fishing and even winter seasons prove fruitful. Charter ships consistently report strong hauls, allowing anglers to sample surfcasting, trolling, spin-reeling and more. It's a mecca of rods and reels.

Captain Wagner, as well as other American anglers, will soon be filling their fish wells.
