It’s quite likely that you’re fond of the Nissan Altima and may even have one in your garage. But how much do you know about this venerable model?

Well, as it turns out, the Altima wasn’t even originally the “Altima,” if that makes sense. The name was first used as an identifier for the top trim of the Nissan Leopard line in Japan beginning in 1986. Later, it was applied to the Laurel mid-size vehicle sold in the Caribbean and Central America prior to 1992. It wasn’t until the Japanese Stanza car (a Nissan Bluebird clone) was replaced by the US-built Altima in 1992 for the 1993 model year that we finally saw the Altima as we know it today. It was initially built in Smyrna, Tennessee until June 2004, when manufacturing continued in Canton, Mississippi.

The ascent of the Altima has been swift. The third-generation model was named the North American Car of the Year in 2002, selling a then record-breaking number of 200,000 units that same year. Now, technologies in the 2019 Altima include zero-gravity seats, five-inch infotainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, and more.
