Nissan has added another accolade to its growing list of honors. The automaker recently won an Excellence in Climate Solutions Award for its ground-breaking work to develop electric vehicle technology and energy services systems. The distinction is part of the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards, which is given by the Financial Times and the International Finance Corporation.Â

Nissan was specifically recognized for its Vehicle-to-Grid technology, which enables energy from electric cars to be fed back into the electricity grid. This pioneering innovation not only makes the grid more stable, but it also helps consumers better manage their energy supply and costs.

But, thatâ€™s not all. Nissanâ€™s second-life energy storage systems were also recognized by the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards. This cutting-edge invention re-uses batteries from Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 electric vehicles and turns them into energy storage units for homes and other buildings. Most recently, the technology was tested in Namie, Japan, which is a city that was abandoned after the Fukushima nuclear disaster following the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Old Nissan Leaf batteries were used to power LED streetlights to make roads safer for vehicles and pedestrians.

"This recognition validates Nissan's continuing efforts to integrate EV technology into society," said Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci in a press release. "From launching the first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, to developing Vehicle-to-Grid technology, we will continue leading the way toward a zero-emission future through Nissan Intelligent Mobility."
