The speed crown may soon rest upon a new chassis - with Nissan declaring that its 2019 GT-R will be the fastest sports car in the world. Such a statement has drawn curiosity and confusion in equal measure, with critics uncertain if the brand can keep its promise.

The Kirkland Nissan team, however, has full faith in the new GT-R. After all, it will serve as a direct successor to the record-breaking 2018 model.

As The Drive explains, Nissan is gearing up for highway domination - certain that its 2019 GT-R will prove unbeatable on straightaways and sharp curves alike. While official specs remain scarce, critics anticipate that this car will mimic the performance ratios of the 2018 version (which is anchored by a potent 3.8L V6). 700 HP is expected and torque values could rise as much as 10%, revving to more than 500 lb.-ft.

How will Nissan achieve such staggering power? The answer would lie in its engine design - which should pair twin-turbochargers with a high-capacity tuner. This would raise the redline past 7,000 RPMs and it would allow the car to deliver pure V6 performance (a 9.0:1 compression ratio would deliver exceptional combustion, while double overhead camshafts would enhance air intake levels to optimize temperature). No official top-speed ratings have been released, but many expect the GT-R to surpass 200 MPH.
