Seattle, World Take Note As Nissan Xmotion Wins Innovative Design Award at 2018 NAIAS

Hot on the heels of the LEAF’s FIPA Green Car of the Year honors today comes the announcement that the Nissan Xmotion has garnered its own acclaim. The concept has claimed the "Innovative Use of Color, Graphics or Materials" award at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. This marks the second consecutive time that the manufacturer has nabbed the commendation.

The innovation award comes courtesy of EyesOn Design. It was given to the Xmotion concept in part because of its deft incorporation of hues. Prominently featured on the exterior is a special silver that was created to resemble pewter, a malleable metal often used in Japanese handicrafts. On the interior, red and white were integrated to represent the country’s national colors. Additionally, black was put in to reflect modernity and the advance of technology, as were Nishijin-weave carbon-fiber accents.


It’s not just color, however. The innovative design award was also presented due to Xmotion’s dedication to new user interfaces. The concept pushes the boundaries of modern technology by introducing fresh ways for the driver to control the crossover, including gestures, voice commands, and eye movements. It’s something far beyond what’s seen in current SUVs such as the Pathfinder.

Nissan’s Xmotion Concept Sparks Imagination of Seattle Residents

Revealed yesterday at Detroit’s 2018 North American International Auto Show, the Nissan Xmotion concept is a spirited design exploration of everything the future of SUVs can hold for Seattleites and global citizens. It fuses American-centric style with traditional Japanese culture for something altogether different, as is readily apparent when you examine its breathtaking exterior.



Nissan remarks that the refreshed “boomerang” headlights go a step further in aggressiveness on the Xmotion concept, now resembling “forged steel blades" unlike anything seen on, say, the Murano. Cool, right? But there’s also a functional side to this—the lamps are integrated smartly into a single piece, offering turn signals, positional units, and both high and low beams all in one place. Further, the color and intensity alter depending on conditions.


The rear of the Xmotion is similarly inspired. The details are taken from the warmth of kumiko (Japanese puzzles and woodwork). When the taillights are on, blocks will appear that are created by a holographic image—effectively, an optical illusion that oozes progressive style. And on the sides of the crossover, the U-shaped body provides an unbroken visual wave that undulates from front to back.

New Nissan Xmotion Concept Could Offer Seattle Amazing Interior Design

Today, Nissan took the wraps off their incredible new Xmotion crossover concept at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The forward-thinking compact SUV offers an amazing fusion of Japanese and American craftsmanship on the interior, and we’d be remiss not to detail it in full.

The cabin was built based on the imagery of a river. The center console area acts as the “bridge” over it, offering the allure of the Japanese architectural wood joinery practice, kanawa tsugi, which is most often featured in religious shrines of that country. The Xmotion’s instrument panel continues that design in what Nissan considers a “robust bone structure” that exudes strength. It's something wholly different than what you see in today's Rogue, for example.


More concretely, there’s a ton of technology to appreciate in the Xmotion concept. There are seven total displays throughout the dash that offer vehicle settings and information. Notably, each can be controlled through voice commands, gestures, and even eye movements—quite the user interface revolution! There’s also a “digital room mirror” on the ceiling that Nissan has yet to expound upon in detail.

Pick your jaws up off the floor, America! Nissan today unveiled their new Xmotion SUV concept at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and dang, does it look poised to change the crossover game. 


Pronounced “cross motion,” the concept is a six-passenger, three-row SUV with a burly American aesthetic and utility merged with a more nuanced Japanese design sensibility and beauty. Essentially, you’re getting the best of both worlds, inside and out. There’s a lot to digest, so in this post we’ll zero in on the exterior.




The outside of the Xmotion concept is a signal as to the future of Nissan design. It’s dynamic, with the now-signature front grille but also a set of standout U-shaped headlamps and a strong overall stance. All-terrain tires are included alongside a stern, metal-crafted wheel aesthetic. They are mechanical tool-inspired with a tread that’s actually laminated over the 21-inch aluminum alloy rim structure--imagine if your Pathfinder had that! Additionally, the taillight look pulls from traditional Japanese woodwork, while a retractable “rooftop box” appears positively stunning.
