Across the pond, the 2018 Nissan Leaf has added a new trophy to its growing list of awards. The EV scored a five-star result in the revised European New Car Assessment Programme (also known as Euro NCAP), which was recently amended to include a number of new assessments that address key crash scenarios involving vulnerable road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

This isnâ€™t the Leafâ€™s first rodeo with the Euro NCAP. In 2011, it became the worldâ€™s first electric car to get a five-star rating from the safety organization. Seven years later and the Leaf continues to break ground â€“ it is the first automobile to be examined under the Euro NCAPâ€™s revised 2018 guidelines.Â

During the testing, it was found that adult occupant protection was particularly strong, earning the Leaf a 93 percent score, while its child occupant protection followed closely behind with 86 percent. In the pedestrian protection and safety assist areas, the 2018 Nissan Leaf scored 71 percent.

These high scores are a result of the Leafâ€™s standard safety features, which include Autonomous Emergency Braking, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Lane Departure Warning. All systems can detect vulnerable road users and alert the driver of their proximity, thus mitigating a serious collision.Â

According to the Euro NCAP, the Leaf demonstrates that environmental friendliness does not need to come at the expense of improved safety â€“ and we have to agree. Why choose one over the other when you can have both?
