Dear Robert,

My 2018 Nissan Maxima cut out while I was driving it recently. This happened to a friendâ€™s car before, and it was due to a bad fuel pump. Do you think Iâ€™m having the same problem?

Hi, Dave!

There are a number of issues which could cause your 2018 Nissan Maximaâ€™s engine to cut out, so it's hard for me to say without inspecting it. But, if your fuel pump is faulty, the car's engine will shut off.

The fuel pump ensures that gasoline gets from your carâ€™s tank to its engine. Vehicles can run for a short time while this component is failing but, eventually, the drivetrain will cut out.

There are some signs which will alert you to this issue. If you hear a whining noise from your engine or are having trouble starting it, it could be down to a bad fuel pump.

If your Maxima runs smoothly at a relatively high speed but then starts to splutter, this could also be caused by a failing fuel pump.

You should take your vehicle down to our Service Department and let the Technicians inspect it: they can quickly diagnose the problem.

When I pressed my 2018 Nissan Titanâ€™s horn yesterday nothing happened. I think there could be a problem with its fuse? Is this something that I need to worry about?

Hi, Sam!

There are a number of things which could cause your 2018 Nissan Titanâ€™s horn to fail. A blown fuse is the probably most common cause of this issue.

Like every electrical part in your Titan, the horn needs a fuse to work. If this unit has blown, youâ€™ll have to replace it. These components have a fork-like look and are connected by a wire.

If this wire is broken it means the unit has blown, and youâ€™ve found your culprit. Thankfully, fuses are cheap and easy to replace.

If thereâ€™s no problem with your fuse then the issue could be related to your truckâ€™s relay, the horn itself, or even your airbag.

The Technicians at our Service Department can quickly diagnose your Titan's problem. So, if you canâ€™t find the cause yourself, you should call in.

This issue wonâ€™t cause severe damage to your vehicle. But a horn could prevent you from getting involved in an accident, so this isnâ€™t something you should let linger.

Hi, Veronica!

Iâ€™m happy to hear both you and your friend were ok. I hope this won't happen in your 2019 Nissan Rogue but, if it does, this is what you should do.

Stay calm and guide your car to the side of the road so it doesnâ€™t obstruct traffic. The power steering and brakes wonâ€™t work, but you can still control the vehicle: itâ€™ll just be more difficult.

If youâ€™re finding it too difficult to stop the car, you can try using the emergency brake.

Once you've come to a stop, you should try to restart your Rogue. If youâ€™re successful, you need to get it to a repair shop right away.

If you canâ€™t restart your car, you should put your flashers on so that other drivers know you have a problem and don't pass too closely. Then youâ€™ll need to call your local repair shop and get your vehicle towed there ASAP.

Throughout winter the windows on my 2018 Nissan Kicks were freezing shut. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Hi, Linda!

There are a number of ways to stop the windows on your 2018 Nissan Kicks from freezing shut. Just make sure you never pour warm water over them because this can easily crack or even break the glass.

To prevent this from happening, youâ€™ll first need to head down to your local auto parts store and pick up a can of silicone spray and a rag.

Silicone spray can be used to lubricate just about anything and itâ€™s resistant to water which stops ice from forming.

Put your Kicksâ€™ window all the way down and spray the rubber channels on the right, left, and top: a light coating should do the trick. This will keep the material soft and pliable and stop it from sticking to the glass.

Roll the window up and down a few times to spread the solution. Finally, wipe away any excess silicone with your rag.

I think that I understand what your friend is suggesting, although theyâ€™re explaining it quite poorly. Donâ€™t go turning your 2019 Nissan Sentraâ€™s traction control off just yet.

Let me start by saying, when youâ€™re driving on ice and snow you need traction control more than ever. This feature ensures you have as much grip as possible while youâ€™re moving. But, if you become stuck in these conditions, you may need to turn the system off.

Traction control applies your carâ€™s brakes when it detects wheelspin. So if the system is functional when youâ€™re trying to pull away from a patch of slippery ice or snow, it could stop forward progression entirely.

The best thing to do in this situation could be to turn the system off and allow your car to gain some forward momentum. Then, once youâ€™re on the move, switch your traction control back on again.

I love the foresight here. You guys are planners, and that will pay off in the long run! This type of question just so happens to be one Iâ€™ve done a lot of homework on. Let me share it with you.

Here are some things to consider while seeking coverage:

1. Shop around. It sounds like you are already doing this, but make sure you get quotes from as many places as possible. These numbers are always fluctuating, and it is hard to know who is best without asking.

2. Look small. The big companies make it sound like they are lower, but often local and regional companies are more flexible and can compete for your business just as well.

3. Combine. If you already have home insurance, see if they offer a bundling discount for your house and auto. Usually they do.

Every time I take my Nissan Murano to get its oil changed, I end up paying double because they say I need a new air filter. Is this something I can do myself and save money?

Hi Deena,

Classic problem! We have all gone to a quickie lube change joint and ended up spending a ton more than we planned. The good news is that you are on the right track. The filter is an easy way to save cash and even simpler to replace yourself.

1. Buy a filter that is made just for your car. Ask the pros at your auto parts store for help.

2. Locate the housing under the hood. Usually, itâ€™s a black plastic dome with a hose sticking out the side.

3. Unclasp the hinges that keep this lid on tight and pull it off.

4. Bingo! Youâ€™ve found it. Simply pop it out and put a fresh one in. Put everything back the way it was. Easy!

This entire operation should take only a few minutes and cost less than $20.

If you feel like rates have dipped since you started your loan, it absolutely can save you cash to transfer elsewhere. But, you are correct, there can be catches in this process. Here are a few to keep an eye out for.

First off, look at the specifics. Lenders often have guidelines that will prohibit you from refinancing with them. Some snags include the age of the car, mileage, the amount of outstanding debt left.

Once a new one is secured, make sure the fine print still makes it worth it. Most places have a fee to transfer and the amounts differ wildly. Also, inquire about any pre-payment penalties. These companies are in business to collect on the interest, so some will ding you for completing it early. Crazy, right?

You are going to think I am crazy, but replace the gas cap. By picking up a new one at an auto parts store, you might just save yourself a lot of headaches. Thatâ€™s because a loose fuel cap is one of the most frequent causes of such dashboard head scratchers.

Ok, so this is kinda embarrassing. My Nissan Sentra has run out of windshield wiper fluid. The hard part is that I do not have the slightest clue how to replace it. I donâ€™t want to ask my mechanic. Can you help?

Donnie,

You came to the right place. We do not pass judgement here! You would be shocked by how many people have issues like this and never make a peep. This is one of the simplest pieces of maintenance an owner can do.

1. Purchase a jug of windshield wiper solution. Itâ€™s usually in a gallon container and bright blue.
2. Pop your hood and locate a plastic cap that says â€œFLUIDâ€ or something similar.
3. Pull that cover off, which should reveal a funnel-like opening.
4. Pour in the liquid until you reach the FILL line.
5. With an empty tank, you will probably use up the entire bottle.
6. Replace everything the way it came. Also, know that it will take a few pulls of the handle to get everything to eject onto the glass.

This will be a snap in your Sentra. Donâ€™t worry. Let me know if you have any other car care questions!
