The 2018 Nissan Rogue SV is fresh on car lots around the country, bringing with it a wide array of new features that make many optional, expensive packages a thing of the past. Standard inclusions are all the rage on this SUV for this model year, and Seattle stands to benefit as a result.

Check out that exterior. On the front, you’ll notice a revised “V-Motion” grille with aggressive chrome and a larger, repositioned Nissan decal. In the mood for a fun 3D experience? Actually, a better question: down for a Star Wars interactive web extravaganza? Yup—we thought so! And that’s exactly what Nissan has delivered with their “Command Your Craft” offering.

Available on NissanUSA.com/StarWars, the experience is entirely gesture-based and lets players take control of The Last Jedi-inspired vehicles crafted directly by the Japanese manufacturer. Want to fight the bad guys? Represent as Poe Dameron and hop into a BB-8-loaded X-wing (the 2018 Rogue). Feeling a little mischievous, and, well, “evil” today? Embrace the Dark Side as Kylo Ren in his TIE Silencer (2018 Maxima). You can use your hands to raise, rotate, and summon on-screen cars.


The breakthrough Star Wars 3D experience utilizes Google’s TensorFlow. The software library is open-source and wields machine learning to recognize and categorize images. It’s cutting-edge, just in time for The Last Jedi, and perfect to use for representing cars like the 2018 Maxima. If you regularly travel with kids or other passengers, the doors on your vehicle get a real work-out. Sometimes they are shut gently, but oftentimes they are slammed or closed with fervor as you rush out of your car to make it to a meeting or get inside the grocery store before they close for the night.
 
The doors on your vehicle take a lot of abuse, opening and closing 45,000 times over the course of a decade. That’s a lot of slamming!
 
And the engineers at Nissan? They understand this reality, which is why they enlisted help from an automated test device – a 1.5-ton durability robot, whose sole job is to test car door reliability at the Nissan Technical Center North America (NTCNA) in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
 
The robot is named Rosie, but also goes by the nickname Mrs. Doorboto. In three days, she opens and closes a door as much as a typical customer does over the course of a decade, working around the clock with no breaks. And while Rosie works hard and for long hours, her robo-job is highly appreciated because it would be physically impossible (and mentally taxing) for a human tester to assess the durability of the door hinges, latch mechanisms, weatherstripping and window glass frames over a replicated ten-year period.
 
 
It’s certainly a tough job, but an important one, as it relates back to Nissan’s promise of quality, durability, and innovation. And to that, we say, "Domo arigato, Mrs. Doorboto."
