Nissan has added another accolade to its growing list of honors. The automaker recently won an Excellence in Climate Solutions Award for its ground-breaking work to develop electric vehicle technology and energy services systems. The distinction is part of the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards, which is given by the Financial Times and the International Finance Corporation.Â

Nissan was specifically recognized for its Vehicle-to-Grid technology, which enables energy from electric cars to be fed back into the electricity grid. This pioneering innovation not only makes the grid more stable, but it also helps consumers better manage their energy supply and costs.

But, thatâ€™s not all. Nissanâ€™s second-life energy storage systems were also recognized by the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards. This cutting-edge invention re-uses batteries from Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 electric vehicles and turns them into energy storage units for homes and other buildings. Most recently, the technology was tested in Namie, Japan, which is a city that was abandoned after the Fukushima nuclear disaster following the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Old Nissan Leaf batteries were used to power LED streetlights to make roads safer for vehicles and pedestrians.

"This recognition validates Nissan's continuing efforts to integrate EV technology into society," said Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci in a press release. "From launching the first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, to developing Vehicle-to-Grid technology, we will continue leading the way toward a zero-emission future through Nissan Intelligent Mobility."

According to a recent press release from Nissan Motor Company, Ltd., the automaker will soon begin building vehicles with a new type of steel, which combines high tensile strength with a previously unachievable degree of formability. This new engineering promises to bring forth a fresh generation of lighter vehicles, which will not only lower emissionsÂ but provide improved protection for occupants.

Nissan is the first automaker to employ high-formability steel, which was jointly developed with the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation. According to the release, â€œthe steelâ€™s combination of stamping formability and strength makes it possible to form parts with complex shapes that are thinner and lighter than those made of conventional high tensile strength steel.â€ It also provides an enhanced ability to absorb excess energy in a collision, thus improving the safety of the vehicle.

Nissanâ€™s luxury division, INFINITI, currently uses the steel in its QX50 midsize SUV, which is available for sale in the United States. Itâ€™s the worldâ€™s first vehicle with front and rear side members made from 980-megapascal ultra-high tensile strength steel, along with other body frame parts. Nissan plans to expand the use of the material to more models in an effort to enhance fuel efficiency, as well as driving performance by lowering vehicle weight. This will also help the brand reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2022, as part of their ongoing sustainability plan.Â

Could Nissan Bring Its ePower Drivetrain to Seattle?

According to a recent Automotive News Europe article, Nissan Motor Corporation is considering an expansion of its ePower hybrid drivetrain to additional global markets within the next few years. The technology is currently available on the Nissan Note and Serena in Japan with the Juke soon to follow.

The extension of ePower to European markets is in response to more stringent CO2 targets and a reduced dependency on diesel fuels, which are set for 2020-2021. There is also talks of rolling out a range of fully-electric vehicles similar to the Leaf EV, but Nissan is studying other methods that would allow for partial electrification.

â€œWe can do a 48-volt mild hybrid, or we can do a plug-in hybrid, but what is most interesting right now is the success we have had with ePower technology,â€ says Ponz Pandikuthira, Vice President of Product Planning in the interview.

ePower uses a small gasoline engine to act as a range extender to charge a battery, which is especially useful in markets where charging infrastructure is weak or not widely available. It is also cheaper to produce when compared to plug-in hybrid technologies, partly because the engine is not connected to the driveline and the vehicle doesnâ€™t require 400 kg of additional battery weight. Itâ€™s a great solution for the automaker, bridging the gap between traditional diesel fuels and complex plug-in powertrains.

In the article, it was stated that Nissan plans to bring ePower to the U.S., but more likely as an option on higher-end vehicles. The technology will play a larger roll in the Infiniti lineup, come 2021.

According to Kelley Blue Book, the 2018 Kicks proves a worthy successor to the Juke.
