Nissanâ€™s always up to something that involves pushing boundaries and gradually evolving the world weâ€™re living in. Sometimes that purely entails a new automobile-exclusive technology, but at other junctures, itâ€™s something a bit grander in scope. This is the latter case, as the manufacturer is working to nurture a clean energy initiative in Japan and globally.

The initial focus comes in the Land of the Rising Sun. Nissan announced today that 2018 LEAF owners in that country qualify for the free installation of solar panels. The unique offer comes via a partnership between Ecosystem Japan and the automaker, with the goal of achieving the use of 100% clean energy to power the all-new electric vehicle. Anyone that signs up for a qualifying plan will receive the system, which can then be leveraged to juice up their EV.

The 2018 LEAF itself brings the prospect of clean energy usage outside of Japan and to the rest of the world, including within Seattle when the car releases early next year. The new vehicle adopts a maximum driving range of 150 miles on only one charge. Additionally, the all-electric engine produces a healthy 147 horses and 236-lb.-ft. of torque.

Youâ€™ve heard us chatting about the Consumer Electronics Show in this space before, and today we wanted to bring all you tech enthusiasts a little more information about the Japanese automakerâ€™s scheduled appearance this upcoming year. The Las Vegas event, set to kick off on January 9, will mark the reiteration of the manufacturerâ€™s commitment to Intelligent Mobility as well as the U.S. debut of the IMx concept vehicle.

One of the technologies Nissan will have on display at CES 2018 is their ProPILOT Assist. Itâ€™s a progressive adaptive cruise control system thatâ€™s set to move the industry forward with its inclusion on upcoming vehicles, including the all-new LEAF. It imbues an automobile with the ability to automatically manage its distance from any car traveling ahead, selectively braking to maintain proper separation. However, it also keeps the machine centered within its lane, adjusting steering as necessary. Fantastic!â€¨â€¨

The IMx concept vehicle is set to wow, too. It offers fully autonomous driving via its PD mode. With that selected, the wheel stows away, all seats recline, and the computer takes over completely. Nissanâ€™s wonder car automatically takes you to your destination, accelerating, braking, and steering all the way.

Nissan has announced that the initial batch of 2018 Kicks has come out of their Rio de Janeiro industrial complex and are now being transported to neighboring Argentina. The 933 units mark some of the first shipping anywhere in the world. They begin wider global production ahead of the modelâ€™s introduction to Seattle and North America showrooms in June of next year.â€¨â€¨

The Kicks is a fantastic new compact crossover set to shake up the market. It comes packed with a 1.6L four-cylinder motor offering 125 horses and 115-lb.-ft. of torque. The efficiency of the engine is astoundingâ€”the EPA estimates youâ€™ll receive an unbelievable 33 miles per gallon combined. And the Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) is smoother than any automatic youâ€™ve ever driven.â€¨â€¨

The exterior has a lot going for it, too. The now customary V-Motion Nissan grille is used to striking effect, while the headlamps are elongated and boomerang-shaped. This provides a thrilling look. LED technology is available both on the front and rear lights. Additionally, the inclusion of the eye-popping floating roof means there are a total of seven body colors and five two-tone designs offered.

10,000 Europeans Order 2018 Nissan LEAF Ahead of Seattle Release

The all-electric Nissan LEAF is an incredible zero-emissions vehicle thatâ€™s been completely redesigned for 2018, offering brand new performance and intelligence features. Accordingly, consumers are voting with their wallets. A total of 10,000 customers have already pre-ordered the car ahead of next year.

Since its unveiling in October 2017, the 2018 LEAF has received unprecedented interest. Orders for the first EV in the line back in 2010 only numbered in the hundreds. It was, after all, unproven technology. However, there has been a five-fold increase in purchases since 2012, with 83,000 drivers now on the road.

The 10,000 orders in Europe alone come ahead of the LEAFâ€™s release in February 2018. Consumers in Seattle will be eager to get in on the fun, too, as the new car features a number of advancements. Included among these is ProPILOT Advanced Driving Assistance, which monitors vehicles traveling ahead and automatically breaks and centers itself within the lane as necessary. Additionally, the EV boasts a 150-mile rangeâ€¨ and the convenience of ePedal technology. This system enables owners to stop, start, accelerate and brake using only one input.
